Burned Out...

It occurred to me that there have been a glut of stories recently about which I had been meaning to opine but just never got around to it:

Murdered realtor in AR
OK beheading
Ebola
Resignation of SS head for failure at White House
Killer enterovirus

I do think I touched on the egregious failure of the United States Secret Service right when it happened, but I really haven't followed up on the story much. It's kind of hard to, really, because the facts are few, speculation is rampant, and all we know is a mentally disturbed vet managed to vault the fence around 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, stroll across the White House lawn, and then walk through the unlocked door and past an agent. He was eventually tackled by an off-duty agent after passing the stairs to the Obama's private area.

Naturally, the Secret Service downplayed what happened and misled the American public, claiming that he was stopped at the door. That we found out about this at all puts the lie to the idea that the US Government is capable of keeping a conspiracy quiet at any level, although I'm certain it won't stop the 9/11 truther idiots from blathering on. It's a lot like how a chicken's body will run around for hours after the head has been removed...

As for enterovirus and ebola, well, I wouldn't say panic, but I'd sure as hell stock up on non-perishable food, bleach, and gloves. Everything I've read on ebola says it's on a par with AIDS - you need to come into contact with an infected person's bodily fluids in order to develop it. Also, the mortality rates are exceedingly high - but the disease has been striking in places with, well, less-than-stellar medical practices. Enterovirus, well, pretty much the same deal on prevention, and it doesn't seem to be particularly lethal except in conjunction with other medical issues.

I'm far more concerned about going primal on some nitwit warbling on about how eeeeevil Big Pharma is deliberately withholding the cure for ebola because it doesn't affect rich people...

As for the realtor and the OK beheading, well... There's evil out there. Whether it's crazy evil or just plain evil evil, it exists, it walks among us, and it can and will strike at any time. Never lose sight of that fact. As a wise man said, "Carry your damn guns". If you knew when and where evil was going to strike, you'd stay the hell away, right? Be prepared, like for everything else.

I'm staying the hell out of the whole "was the guy in OK a nutjob or a religious fanatic" argument. Honestly, it really doesn't matter a pinch to the person he killed, does it? Whether the person who killed you did so because they heard voices from Planet Weembo or because they really thought they'd get into heaven, you're no more or less dead in either case. There's plenty of whackos out there of all stripes without worrying about their motivation.

Worry about center-of-mass instead.

That is all.

Yes, and no. Unlike HIV/AIDS, ebola can be spread through coughing and sneezing, via aerosolized saliva and mucus coming into contact with someone's eyes, nose, or mouth. The virus can also survive on dried on surfaces such as doorknobs and countertops for several hours, and in fluids for several days.

The CDC has a good FAQ and other information on ebola.

I understand your reluctance to touch on the subject, but I do think it matters a little. Our poles and news media continue to make with the happy talk, but sudden jihad syndrome does seem to have some signs that might warn the potential victims. It's just that they do not think we're sophisticated enough to make the distinction between a fascination in the Koran and fascination in beheading pictures.

That's the big one. AIDS dies pretty quick outside of the host, ebola not so much.

The Cobra is a dangerous snake, carry your gun, and if it's worth shoot once, shoot it twice - then MOZAMBIQUE!

Actually, the question about his motivation is entirely relevant:

If his theology had no bearing on his actions (i.e. his desire to kill, not his method), then it's just another random act of crazy.

If he wasn't really crazy, and his actions were purely the result of his theology, then this is just another random act of Islam.

We've been seeing rather a lot of the latter in the Middle East and Africa of late, along with an alarming number of incidents in countries that aren't traditionally Islamic (The U.K., much of Europe, etc.). As such the motivation in this case is relevant because there is the potential that it demonstrates that the scope of this problem is spreading.

While I certainly hope that he's just a random crazy, I believe that it is unwise to dismiss the alternate possibility out of hand.
