Mindset. Is. Key.

Everything else is a tool. The mind - especially your mindset - is the true weapon.

Woman, 83, thwarts would-be robber with pot of boiling water
An 83-year-old Houston woman has foiled a would-be robber by tossing a pot of boiling water on him.

McClendon, who's lived in her home more than 50 years, tells Houston television station KTRK she wasn't going to surrender. She fought off the intruder by grabbing a stick and tried to hit him.
And when that failed to dissuade the goblin, she grabbed a pot of boiling water off the stove and dumped it on him.

[Pauses for cheering to subside]

A gun is not a magic talisman. It is simply the most efficient tool with which one can defend one's self from outside aggression. If you lack the motivation to use that tool, you're far better off not having one. In this woman's case, anything else wasn't needed as her sheer octogenarian badassery was sufficient.

One of my favorite Cooperisms is "Owning a handgun doesn't make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician." Truer words were never spoken. I can respect someone that won't own a firearm because they know in their heart that they could not use it. In fact, I'll give them credit more than someone that owns a firearm and isn't sure they could use it. It's one of the unpleasant truths in self-defense: If you ever need to fight for your life, are you prepared to do whatever it takes?

This woman, obvious, was prepared.

That is all.

Me too. I've seen the occasional remark online by people who seem to think every home must be armed. Sorry, that's not what liberty is about. Liberty is the freedom to choose, and to accept the consequences.

I had a friend once who told me she'd be willing to die for her husband. (She'd had a few drinks and we were talking about epic fantasy, where these things happen sometimes.) Then I asked her if she'd kill for him. She didn't say much after that. I never did get an answer.

Of course...Justin will also go on and on about the wonders of brick-fighting (yes, it's as awesome as it sounds)

Man, I'd almost rather get shot than burnt with a whole pot of boiling water onto my clothes and face.

I'm amazed the robber was able to flee; I think she must've mostly missed him.

I'd say she was also a bit pissed off... :-)
