I See More Dumb People...

Joseph in IL sent this one in. I can only assume that the young man at the center of this story was previously brain-damaged...

Man holding breath in Oregon tunnel causes crash
A 19-year-old man told investigators he caused a three-car crash when he fainted while holding his breath as he drove through a tunnel northwest of Portland, Oregon State Police said.

Daniel J. Calhon, of Snohomish, Washington, told investigators he fainted Sunday afternoon while holding his breath in the Highway 26 tunnel near the community of Manning, according to a news release. His car, a 1990 Toyota Camry, drifted across the centerline and crashed head-on with a Ford Explorer.
It's even worse than it sounds. The tunnel is slightly longer than 250 yards. At 20 MPH he'd be through it in half a minute. So, either he's a complete and utter moron, or he did something completely stupid and foolish and nearly killed himself and a whole bunch of other people.

Given what we've seen recently, I'm thinking both.

I just can't fathom what would cause someone to do this; I really can't. It takes quite a bit to make yourself pass out simply by holding your breath; he had to struggle a bit before - while he was driving a car with other people in it. Are we really that divorced from consequences that we think nothing of losing consciousness while driving?

Don't answer that, it's rhetorical...

That is all.

I think he is lying. Something else was going on.

I live near Portland, and I don't see how the description of what happened can be what actually happened. Specifically, he shouldn't have been able to hit another vehicle head on. Hwy 26 is a divided highway, essentially a freeway at that point, and there are two tunnels, one for each direction. Someone hasn't done enough to get the facts straight.

Never mind, this is a different tunnel further away from Portland than I thought.
