Checking Things Out...

So, heading to the potential new Casa del G (Now in Free America!) this afternoon. Doing the home inspection thing, going to find out what, if anything, is wrong with the house we're hoping to buy. We've gotten an appraisal already, and there are a couple of worrisome items, but none that are deal-breakers.

This is the second time I'll be seeing the house; the first was when the whole family walked through. Assuming (and this is a pretty big assumption the way things have gone so far) that everything goes as planned, we will be signing in less than three weeks. Mrs. G and the kids will be down here the weekend prior to the signing, so in less than three weeks we will be reunited.

Which is good, because as much as I love the new job, I really hate being away from my family like this.

I'll be flying (yes, flying; between the thirteen hour nightmare driving home after Thanksgiving and the availability of a flight that was only slightly more than driving, I chose to fly) home tomorrow to wrap up last minute packing and get one last look at the house. After nearly 15 years there, along with another year or more of planning and building, I will admit to a certain degree of sadness to seeing the girl go. On the plus side, it's going to a good family with young kids that will make the most of the extra space.

And, let me remind y'all again, it's in Free America...

That is all.

Well, it is Free America for the moment, but didn't your new comrades just elect a Clinton-bot to take over the reigns? (And worse, he's a carpetbagger. WTF Virginia? Maybe it's time to give Alexandria back to DC.)

Fingers crossed for this phase going easily for y'all!

Arlington and Alexandria both go back to the Federal Territory.
And the new governor is not going to have much affect on the Commonwealth.
The House of Delegates will keep him in check.
The biggest danger comes from the Atty. Gen. and State Secretary. They are the ones who will be verifying and investigating voter registration, voter petitions and initiatives, voter fraud and certifying elections (i.e. Hillary). I fully expect the 2016 election to be the most fraudulent in VA since Jim Crow.

I'm curious about the difference in prices between a house in Massachusetts and one in Virginia. Any big differences you've noticed?

Good luck, Jay. The air does smell of freedom. And springtime in the Southland is a glory.

Drive the neighborhood at different times of day, and over weekends.

Get a map. Drive the area. Look for municipal stuff like wastewater treatment plants, metro parking centers, and other things like railroads or big shopping centers that will make your neighborhood less nice due to smell, noise, traffic or crime.

Schools, I presume, you find OK for your new location.

Get your realtor to look at comparable prices over the past 2 or 3 years (easy on Multiple Listing Service software) to see if value is going up or down recently. You want up.

Above all, find some good neighbors.

Also check zillow.com to see for yourself without using a Realtor. MLS may have only sales mediated by a Realtor.
