See What I Am Leaving Behind?

Patrick OKs Bill To Study Mass. 2024 Olympics Bid
BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has signed into law a bill intended to study the feasibility of the state hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Eileen Donoghue, would create a nine-member commission to analyze all aspects of hosting the games, including infrastructure, transportation, security, lodging, locations, costs and job creation.
You know what "jobs" this is going to create? Zero. Massachusetts simply cannot handle an event the size of the Olympics. There's not enough land, infrastructure, or political will to build the facilities necessary for a successful Olympic bid. We can't build a new baseball field or football stadium because there's not enough room in Boston, yet they're going to magically make room for an Olympic park?

Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta is 21 acres. Where, praytell, are they planning on carving 21 acres out of the city of Boston? Or do they plan on putting the Olympic stadium in central or western Massachusetts? There's plenty of land out west - of course the Mass Pike would slow to an absolute crawl from the time they announced the location until the Olympics were over.

No, what this is is a chance for 9 of the governor's closest friends and supporters to spend the rest of his term jetting around the country on fact-finding missions. Remember, this is the same state that spend $1.6 million on a casino commission to investigate the possibility of casino gambling in Massachusetts - years and years before the state was even remotely capable of entertaining the idea.

Watch for this "commission" to decide it wants to study the past, oh, 50 years worth of summer Olympics and spend the next few years jetting off to each location. Each of the 9 members will of course have to bring their "staff", so however much is earmarked for this study is going to bloat incredibly. This is at a time where the state can't keep the mass transit system running without massive fee hikes - I think we can spend the money more wisely than looking into hosting the 2024 Olympics.

Unless they decide to have a new Olympic event, the hack crawl, in which case we might have a shot at the gold...

That is all.

Surely there must be a lower-middle class neighborhood somewhere that they can take over by eminent domain? What's theirs is theirs, and what's yours is theirs too.

Massachusetts isn't the same as Boston, is it?

(I mean, hosting the Olympics is always a giant mistake, don't get me wrong.)

But I don't see anything in that report suggesting it's about Boston rather than Somewhere In The State...

The eastern 2/3 of the State could probably spare 20-30 acres, somewhere, if needed.

I've never seen ANY city whose citizens WANTED the Olympics. Those that I met in Sydney before the Olympics were thinking of committing political violence.

It would be amusing if the legislature would pass a bill only allowing the fact finding missions to be done over the internet. It would never happen, but sure would be funny.

21 acres is approximately 914,760 square feet, or about 956 feet by 956 feet. Good road access and transit service are also needed. For example, Suffolk Downs offers an area large enough and has a nearby MBTA stop.

If you built a facility that could also house MLB baseball games, then you would have an appealing solution to several problems.

The major problem is building something new and different but still the same for those who cannot deal with any change.

It will be 'interesting' to track those expenditures...

If it's acres of land and a need to build new facilities, they should start holding the Olympics in Detroit.

The London Olympics needed 500+ acres in Metro London (plus other sites outside London) with New Construction costs of around 1.5 Billion US $. Based on our stirling record of controlling the construction budget Bloat and schedule, I'd say plan on spending that will make the big dig look cheap and on time.

We will be ready for the 2024 Olympics sometime in 2045 and by then I don't care anymore.

Well, I expect their first fact-finding waypoints to research the Summer Olympics, will be Squaw Valley, CA, and Lake Placid, NY.

Just because it follows per liberal logic.

For the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Harvard Stadium in Boston hosted several preliminary football (soccer to us Americans) games because of the inability of Los Angeles to host all games. A similar dispersal of event sites was also used in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
