Paging Marion Barry...

...we have found your counterpart in Toronto...

Toronto mayor admits crack use, plans to keep job
TORONTO (AP) — Toronto Mayor Rob Ford acknowledged for the first time Tuesday that he smoked crack "probably a year ago" when he was in a "drunken stupor," but he refused to resign despite immense pressure to step aside as leader of Canada's largest city.
...
Allegations that the mayor had been caught on video smoking crack surfaced in news reports in May. Ford initially insisted the video did not exist, sidestepped questions about whether he had ever used crack and rebuffed growing calls to leave office.
So, basically, he lied through his teeth, then backpedaled when it became obvious that he was about to be exposed. Great guy. Gets drunk to the point of blacking out, is abusive to his aides, uses illegal drugs; yeah, that's exactly the kind of guy I want running my city. I like how he tries to explain the crack use away as "it happened during one of my drunken stupors." ONE OF? Who does this guy think he is, a Kennedy?

Let's look at this, shall we? Dude's 44 years old - he should know better. He is still getting falling-down drunk on what appears to be a regular basis, and some of these escapades include him getting so drunk that (allegedly) he doesn't even remember what happened. And this is the mayor of the largest city in Canada, folks. This isn't Homer Simpson here.

When a politician makes you long for the maturity of Marion Barry, you know there's a problem...

That is all.

And yet he's still more popular than the previous mayor.

Ford won by presenting himself as a regular guy and not one of Toronto's "downtown" politicians. (What we would call a "beltway insider" in Washington.) True, his family is wealthy, but just as troubled as any other family in Canada, and more so than many. That makes him a real person with a real person's problems in many people's eyes. He's one of them, and they'll stick by him.

I'd also point out that even Marion Barry was re-elected to public office after doing time for his drug conviction. To the kind of people these guys appeal to, that's not the black eye you'd think it would be.

Toronto. Go figure.

Signed,

KevinC, proud Calgarian (where our mayors are drunks, not crackheads).

Yet he is far more honest and less corrupt than the new Governor of Virginia. I'm stunned the most openly corrupt member of the Clinton cabal was just elected Governor of what used to be a red state.

Now, now. Deliberately choosing to be black-out drunk excuses you from -any- personal responsibility whatsoever for any choices you make during your insensibility.

Rob Ford is the first conservative mayor in decades in Toronto and despite his propensity for eating too much and drinking too much he is the best mayor in decades. The press in Toronto is all leftist and they've been hounding him ever since he was elected. Prior to this a reporter was in the vacant lot next door peering into the mayor's backyard. Here's one of Communist Broadcast Corp's 'stars' scaring the crap out of his 5 yr old daughter.
