Starting Monday Off Right...

If there's one thing I like, it's starting Monday off right. And by "right", I of course mean "with a dead goblin". Several folks sent this story in...

Fort Bend teen kills intruder
The teenage son of a Houston police officer shot and killed an intruder Friday at the family's home in Fort Bend County, officials said.

The teen was on the telephone with his father, Houston Police Department officer Ken Patmon, when he opened fire at one of two people who had forced their way into the home, officials said.
There is only one thing that I see wrong with this entire story. No, not that he called his dad rather than 911 - that's completely understandable. No, not that he went to George Bush High School (although I'm sure the media will blame the death on Bush...) No, my issue is with this:
"He's never used a firearm - ever," the officer said. "He maintained his poise and did extremely well under the circumstances."
He's 18 years old, going into the armed forces, and you've never taken him to the range? I fired my first gun when I was *eight* for crying out loud, and that was in Massachusetts for pete's sake! Now, I could understand it if he had never shot that handgun before or even a handgun before, but to never have fired a gun? I can only hope that the father is saying that to further reduce the likelihood that his son will be charged with anything.

Then again, this is Texas here - they might charge him for missing the other goblin...

Dead Goblin Count: 445

That is all.

Just another illustration of the fact that most cops are not "gun people" and most likely know less about guns and their use than your average hobbyist.

I'd be willing to bet that the dad has never been to a gun range either, outside of the required annual re-qualification.

I don't know that I'd go that far. Maybe the son just never had an interest, and his father respected that. But if the son was able to keep his cool and DTRT I'd say his dad must have done something right.

never shot a gun? in Texas? is that even legal???

heck, my 12 and 10 year old cousins (female and male, respectively) were given M1 carbines as Christmas presents!

So they want us to believe that in short time the goblins were in the house, Dad instructed his son to find and retrieve his backup-backup weapon (remember he was on duty, so dad would have had his service weapon(s) with him) from where ever it was hidden / locked up, take the safety off, ( or maybe even unlock it / load it / cycle it ) aim and fire successfully for the first time?

This is purely a case of "This is our story, son, and we are sticking to it" from an experienced LEO who has dealt with the Press in the past.

notDilbert nailed it, I suspect.
