Out Of Your Damn Mind...

$12,000 Bicycle Stolen In Jamaica Plain
BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a custom bicycle that was stolen from Jamaica Plain.

The bike, which retails at $12,000, was taken during a recent break-in on Jamaica Street.
TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS for a damn bicycle? Unless you're in the damn Olympics, and even then that's iffy, why on earth would you drop that kind of money on a pedal bike? Now, don't get me wrong. You will never read the words "No one *needs* [anything]" on this blog (unless in comments). You want to drop five figures on a mountain bike, you go right ahead. This is America, and if you got the money legally (or at least didn't hurt anyone else in the process of getting the money), power to you. Buy whatever it is that floats your boat.

I just can't help but look at that $12,000 price tag and think about how that's a damn good entry into the Class III Full Auto world...

That is all.

I don't see a problem with spending a lot of cash (if you have it) on a specialty item. This bike is no different than a collector's gun or a legal full auto. The problem here is that most people who have such specialty items usually use them only for specific activities and keep them secure at all other times. I'm going to guess that the victim here had the bike on a car rack and went into the local Starbucks blissfully in condition white and exited some time later to be mugged by reality.

That's a lot of dough for a mountain bike. Which as you and Armed Texan point out is the owner's business.

Still, a bike that expensive should be locked securely when you're butt isn't actually on it.

None of which excuses the theft. I hate thieves and feel that they should be publicly flogged before going to prison.

WTF is John Kerry doing riding his bike in JP????

It most definitely wasn't John Kerry's bike, since it had a seat on it.

On the other hand I do get similar arguments from folks who are fans of a Ruger P95, Taurus PT92, or such (less than $300.00 used) when I have a slew of various SIGs (close to $1K new)..."Why on EARTH would you pay that much for a 9mm?!?"

And now I've got my sights set on a P210. It never ends; the value of that price for a toy is in the eye & wallet of the beholder.

12 grand is in the high mid-level to low high end of pricing for bikes now a days. Just pick up any bicycling magazine that has an annual bike review and you will see what I mean. Bikes under about $2,500 are almost passé! It is absolutely nuts.

Glenn is right, I've seen RACKS of $10000 bikes in Japan, they keep the 'expensive' ones locked up.
