Always Look On The Bright Side of Life...

Arkansas SWAT officers kill man, 107, in standoff
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) — A 107-year-old man was killed after SWAT officers shot back at him during a standoff at a home, police in the southeastern Arkansas city of Pine Bluff said Sunday.

Police were called to the home Saturday afternoon about a disturbance and say officers arrived to find Monroe Isadore had threatened two people by pointing a weapon at them.
You know what? If, at the age of 107, I am killed in an active shooting exchange with a SWAT team, I will consider it a life well-lived... From all appearances, the encounter actually looks like a justifiable use of the SWAT team - they were in negotiations with the man killed, they used a distraction device, they tried to end the confrontation without bloodshed. The age of the man is immaterial - when you start shooting at police officers, you should expect return fire...

107 years old, though, and still able to put a SWAT team in fear for their life? That's a claim very few people will ever get to make. I hope that - should I somehow manage to make it well over a century - I'll still be able to lift a pistol, let alone fire one. If I were a betting man, I'd wager he wasn't in full command of his senses - but that still doesn't mean he's not posing a danger to others around him. Sure, it sounds crazy that the police had to shoot a 107 year old man, but that's the double-edged nature of the firearm - that 107 year old man is just as dangerous as Ray-Ray with his fohtay.

Now, 107 years old and shot by an irate husband...

That is all.

I had same thoughts when I saw this.

The only thing to add was his 25 year old wife, a former Miss Arkansas, was quite distraught about the shooting. (joking)

Gerry,

When I saw the headline, my first thought was WTF. 107 years old and they had to shoot him?

Reading into it (and yes, I know, we're making a pretty big leap of faith that a] the SWAT report was what actually happened, and b] the article is correct as written), it's hard to see what the SWAT team could/should have done different. There's an armed dude threatening folks and he opens fire when you get there. Doesn't matter if he's 107 or 17, he's going down...

That shows just how effective a gun is at leveling the playing field, doesn't it? A guy that age wouldn't be regarded as a threat by most people - including criminals. But put a gun in his hand and the knowledge to use it, and even the police have to respect him.

My only "WTF" moment concerning this incident is the man in question was alone in his bedroom, no hostages, no visuals on SWAT, and they had a camera on him. They also had loosed gas into the room.
I don't see the need to bust the door in and "go for it". At 107, I'm sure he'd of nodded off at some point. Which means no one HAD to die.

And then lock him up for 6 months or life, whichever comes first.
