Why Context Is Important...

Because without it, you could draw pretty much any conclusion you wanted from this story:

Green paint splattered on the Lincoln Memorial
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Park Police in Washington say the Lincoln Memorial has been temporarily closed after someone splattered a splash of green paint on the statue.
Police say the apparent vandalism was discovered around 1:30 a.m. Friday on the statue, the pedestal and the floor. No words, letters or symbols were visible in the paint.
So, basically, all we have is that someone threw green paint on the Lincoln memorial. No motives, no statement, no nothing; just a raw act of vandalism against one of the most enduring monuments in DC. Was this a white supremacist showing their displeasure with the man who signed the Emancipation Proclamation? A Tea Party activist upset about state's rights? One of the OWS crowd out to upset folks by bespoiling a national monument? Spoiled kids out for a larf?

You could, quite literally, spend all day coming up with conspiracy theories and potential suspects.

All we know, for now, is that someone has defaced one of our national symbols. It's on the freakin' penny, for crying out loud, and some dimwit thought it would be a good idea to temporarily deface it. This has upset a good friend of mine. I don't like it when people upset my friends. If it's a statement you wanted to make, you chose a really poor method of saying it, because whatever it was you intended is lost in the fact that you threw paint on the damn Lincoln Memorial. Your message, whatever it was, is immensely overshadowed by the sheer dickery of how you presented it.

And before folks start in with the conspiracy theories (and they already have) - no, this isn't some shadowy Eric Holder plot to clamp down on the First Amendment or whatever crackpot idea you have rattling around in your tinfoil covered brain. In case you missed it, they've already taken a huge steaming crap on the Constitution and the First Amendment, and no one seemed to care. There's no way on G-d's green earth they're going to overplay their hand and do something this horribly blatant. Again, the reaction is swift, furious, and universal - no one wants to see the Lincoln Memorial closed because some idiot threw paint on it.

It's a pretty sad statement that the best we can hope for is that this is just some stupid college kid prank - that our best case scenario is simple vandalism for vandalism's sake rather than some imbecile trying to foment something...

That is all.

All I can figure is that it's to protest Lincoln's role in the Martian Genocide, but why bring that up now after all these years?

Funny how the Feds will spend Billions tracking everyone's Cell Phones, and Millions for Ammo for Homeland Security, yet they can't come up with a couple of mil for CCTV Cameras for the Washington Mall?

Must be Bush's Fault.

Many years back on a family trip to DC, we were in line to tour the Capitol when someone threw a jar of red paint on it. Bam, tour canceled...

See? The fact that you think it ISN't some shadowy Eric Holder plot means that he has succeeded. :)

It's obvious.

Lincoln was the president of the United States during the Civil war. During the Civil war one of the main reasons why the North won was its use of rail roads and it's industrial centers to out produce the south which relied heavily on its agricultural production for survival. This is why people with the last name Sherman occasionally get their throats cut in Georgia, when General Sherman had his march to the sea massive amounts of fields and farms were burned and people lost their livelyhoods.

So, we have a man who gladly made America transition from a majority agrarian society to an industrial one, causing more CO2 to be produced into the atmosphere. Add in the green paint, a symbol of the so called "Green Movement" and it's obvious who did this.

Al Gore.

What color is the flag of a certain group who "hate us for our freedom?"

And now Homeland Security will get called in to clean the paint and declare it a "win" on terrorism. =/

Zombies?? That's silly. Everyone knows Lincoln was a Vampire Slayer!

(A truly stupid movie, but the action sequences were fun -- and they managed to find an actor who looked like Lincoln, AND could swing an axe.)

Actually putting the Memorial on the completely worthless penny, should itself be considered vandalism.
