US drops unarmed bombs on Great Barrier Reef
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Two American fighter jets dropped four unarmed bombs into Australia's Great Barrier Reef Marine Park last week when a training exercise went wrong, the U.S. Navy said, angering environmentalists.
The two AV-8B Harrier jets launched from aircraft carrier USS Bonhomme Richard each jettisoned an inert practice bomb and an unarmed laser-guided explosive bomb into the World Heritage-listed marine park off the coast of Queensland state on Tuesday, the U.S. 7th Fleet said in a statement Saturday.
Take that, you stupid reef! That's what you get for taking Nemo away from his dad!
Now, this was an emergency situation and the pilots did eject the bombs away from the reef itself. They're unarmed bombs for practice, so it shouldn't be too difficult to retrieve them if that's possible (~ one ton each, I have no idea how feasible retrieval may or may not be). Maybe some enterprising Aussie can make a small fortune on scrap?
The enviro-prattle is predictable and tedious. One isolated incident and they're condemning the use of the area for military exercises as well as the commitment of the United States to environmental concerns. Lady, we gave you Al Gore; what more do you want? The range that was supposed to be used was improperly cleared, and the jets couldn't land with the practice munitions still in place. The greenies would prefer that we kill innocent folks on the ground or our pilots rather than drop inert bombs in the bay in a last-ditch maneuver.
Good to see your enviro-nazis have the same (lack of) concern for human life as ours, Australia...
That is all.
