Made The Big Time...

A friend e-mailed me with the following news:
Should you feel honored, or be mad?  Dana Farber's public network blocks weapons sites, including yours.

Heh. In even more humorous news, my source tells me that View From the Porch is *not* blocked...

That is all.

I keep telling people it's not a gun blog! :D

You're still accessible from here. But Larry Correia's blog is blocked, and he posts less about guns than you do. Go figure.

Borepatch might be able to elaborate on how block lists are created, but I suspect (with confirming hints from my network guy here at work) net-block vendors provide a default list (that seems to have every site that ever annoyed anybody, ever) and it's up to the individual customers to unblock sites for which they have a legitimate need. I think that would cut down a little on idle browsing at work, because not many employees will complain about My Little Pony sites being blocked. (Except me. I raised hell when they blocked a web comic, claiming it was a malware site. They unblocked it too.)

Anyway, welcome to the big time Jay. You're on somebody's list now!

What is "Dana Farber's public network"?

You are blocked where I work too. But Tam isn't. Go figure...

Jay, your site is blocked from time to time by my (Japanese company that rhymes with Monica Pinolta) company's network, and Tam never is. It also blocks the Web page of a lawyer that specializes in defending people accused of sexually related crimes, but not other lawyers' sites. Heh.

Yeah, you're ALL blocked (Including the NRA) from a certain overseas location I operate out of occasionally... But NO blocks on the Brady bunch or any of their ilk.

One word for you guys: Tor.

None of the blogs I read were blocked when I was at Oak Ridge National Lab for the last couple of months, but the Squirrel Report was.

"Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, is a world leader in adult and pediatric cancer treatment and research."

Most places like DF have public wifi networks for patients.

Y'all are live at a certain behavioural healthcare provider that I can neither confirm nor deny employment with - as are a bunch of regular reads off Tam's blogroll.

However, the NannyWall changes over time, and some things mysteriously appear and disappear. "Weapons" is a catergory, as are: "Games", "Game-Playing" and "Violence". (Wargaming sites count for that. (rolls eyes))

The Something Awful forums were blocked for some time (sigh :( ) but are live again, so I can piss away my free time on the job as well as at home.

The problem with these pretty commercial blocklists is that if *at the time they are created* there's *anything* "prohibited", they're on the list forevermore. I've had custom knifemakers come up blocked for swimsuit images. (LOL)

Ironic, isn't it? The Dana Farber Cancer Research Institute will not allow you to see a bog site that raises funds for cancer research.
