34 Years Ago Today...

Marion Mitchell Morrison passed away at the age of 72. I mention this because he is responsible for one of my all-time favorite quotes, ever; even more favored than Franklin's quote about liberty and safety:
Life is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.
What's your favorite John Wayne quote?

That is all.

Hatari!

As a side note the duke was born in a little town a few hours West of me. I go over there for Appleseeds a few times a year and in the lobby of the hotel they've got a life size cardboard standy from Hondo. You know you're in a good place when John Wayne meets you at the door.

There are two quotes from his last movie The Shootist that are my favorites,

" I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I require the same from them."

and

" First of all, friend there is no one up there shooting at you. Second, I found that most men aren't willing, they bat a eye, or draw a breath before they shoot.I won't"

Nooo... That quote is from "The Friends of Eddie Coyle". Neither John Wayne, nor any of his movies, coined this phrase. As a Bay Stater, you should know this...

You can call me Father, you can call me Jacob, you can call me Jake. You can call me a dirty son-of-a-bitch, but if you EVER call me Daddy again, I'll finish this fight.

Pop Dawson: Say, you don't look too good. The sight of blood bother you?

Jake: Only my own.

and

Martha McCandles: I was wrong you haven't change, have you Jacob McCandles

Jacob 'Big Jake' McCandles: Not one bit.

And now *you* understand. Anything goes wrong, anything at all... your fault, my fault, nobody's fault... it won't matter - I'm gonna blow your head off. No matter what else happens, no matter who gets killed I'm gonna blow your head off.

James Pepper (Ben Johnson): You know, there's an old saying, Miss Sally. There's no law west of Dodge and no God west of the Pecos. Right, Mr. Chisum?

John Simpson Chisum (Wayne): Wrong, Mr. Pepper. Because no matter where people go, sooner or later there's the law. And sooner or later they find God's already been there.

Yes, technically, Wayne's quote was "Life is tough"...

My wife reminded me of this one

Goudy: Now is it not true that you sprang up on old man Wharton and his two sons with a deadly, six shot revolver in your hand?

Rooster Cogburn: I always try to be ready.

Goudy: Was this revolver loaded and cocked?

Rooster Cogburn: Well, a gun that's unloaded and cocked ain't good for nothin'.
