ZOMG! We Need Gun Control Now!

This story makes me both so angry I can't see and tremendously sad all at the same time...

Chicago 'gang member' charged with murder after he 'shot dead six-month-old girl because her dad stole his video-game console'
A 33-year-old documented gang member with 38 prior arrests has been charged in the devastating March shooting of a six-month-old Chicago girl - and police claim the alleged murder was in retaliation for a stolen video game system.

Koman Willis is facing first degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm charges after he allegedly shot dead baby Jonylah Watkins while aiming for her father, Jonathan Watkins.
I want you to wrap your head around a few salient facts. First off, that a 33 year old known felon with gang ties still got his hands on a handgun in a city that had until very recently banned all handguns in the only state in the union without any provisions for carrying of a handgun. Secondly, 38 prior arrests at the tender age of 33 years old and he's out on the street. Yes, tell me again about how we need more laws, about how just one more law is going to make all the difference.

And lastly, I want you to consider that this six month old baby girl was gunned down in a hail of gunfire intended for her father over a stolen game console. A FREAKING VIDEO GAME. For a goddamned XBox, this little girl will never get to grow up. Now, I understand, it's not about a video game. It's about respect, and power, and being the alpha male and retaliating against a wrong perpetrated against you. But damn, to be willing to murder someone over a slight, over a stolen video game? These are not the kind of people that are going to give a hairy rat's ass about how many guns they can buy in a month, or how many bullets their magazine is allowed to hold.

They'll care about a ban on bayonet lugs about as much as they care about prison time. When a young life filled with crimes nets 38 arrests - but they're still out on the street - there's something wrong with the system. These people are not being deterred by existing laws; hell, they're laughing at them. Prison becomes a rite of passage, something that happens and you get out and you get over it. No one fears it, because it's a joke, a revolving door for all but the most shocking of crimes.

Like, you know, murdering an infant over a video game console...

That is all.

you are 100% spot on! I know of one guy,an ex marine, that was busted for embezzling.A non violent crime, but a crime still. He got 5 years.Another guy was busted for drugs and a handgun, got 2 yrs unsupervised probation, then another drug and handgun charge, and was released on unsupervised probation after a week in jail!It seems if you get a lil wasted and yell at your wife, you get 30 days minimum! Most weapons charges are just a throwaway in courts. If they enforced them more, there may be less of a public outcry!

Chicago is not the only city with revolving doors on the jails. A co-worker of mine had his house broken into and robbed about a year ago. The police here in Baltimore, MD caught the guy who did it (and nailed him for a slew of other B&Es, too). The judge was going to sentence this misguided little angel to 30 days until my friend objected during his victim impact statement. Thirty effing days for multiple burglaries!?! WTF?

Then I heard on the radio concerning the ongoing scandal in a prison here, in which a gang leader had corrupted many of the guards, even impregnating some. (See http://nation.time.com/2013/04/24/sex-with-guards-in-baltimore-prison-scandal/) One of the problems is that the guards' union rules let those accused of misconduct resign, have their records wiped clean, and then get re-hired (same job, same place) a few months later. Aaugh!
