WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is set to at least partially lift the veil of secrecy surrounding U.S.-directed drone strikes around the world, a key component of counterterrorism strategy, as he outlines the contours of the continuing threat to American security.
On the eve of the president's speech at the National Defense University, the Obama administration revealed for the first time that a fourth American citizen had been killed in secretive drone strikes abroad. The killings of three other Americans in counterterror operations since 2009 were not widely known before a letter from Attorney General Eric Holder to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy acknowledged the four deaths.Under the current administration, American citizens have been killed by drone strikes. The IRS has gone after the ideological opponents of the president and his party. The government has spied on reporters (who, not for nothing, are extraordinarily sympathetic to the current administration). Terrorists are still detained at Guantanamo Bay. We're still at war in Afghanistan (and extending troops elsewhere in the world) - although we "ended" the war in Iraq (but still have troops there).
They told me this would happen if I voted for John McCain. And Mitt Romney.
Meanwhile, the terrorist organization that the administration has called "on its heels" is still out plotting against the US and her allies. North Korea rattles her sabre with the spectre of nuclear attack. Bombing attacks on US soil - not to mention shootings clumsily disguised as "workplace violence" - bear the hallmarks of terrorist attacks. Our allies also find themselves the target of these same "heeled" terrorists - bomb attacks, shootings, and even public beheadings.
Naturally, public enemy number one in the eyes of the Obama administration is the Tea Party.
At what point does the left turn into a full blown caricature of itself? They're eagerly cheering on a man who makes Richard Nixon look honorable - Nixon may have tried to cover up the Watergate break-in, but at least no one died there. The US Embassy in Benghazi saw four Americans dead - and while it's a lead pipe cinch that the Obama administration lied over the cause of the attack, it's possible they covered up the fact that they denied assistance to the embattled embassy. Coverups. IRS audits. Drone strikes on US citizens. These are the sorts of things leftists worked themselves into a frenzy accusing Bush of doing.
Yet now, the sound of crickets is positively deafening.
That is all.
