NRA Convention, Day One

Some quick initial impressions of the NRA's 142nd Annual meeting...

Houston = much, MUCH better Friday traffic and parking than Pittsburgh. The city of Houston did a fantastic job of getting a large city ready for a big convention from a traffic and parking perspective. Security is impressive, too - and we ran into a cop who's actually a shooter on the walk in.

Venue = HUGE. Is Texas. Everything is bigger in Texas, including the convention center. The press room is enormous, and even then it's standing room only. Ran into Lars and he told me that this year saw a 30% increase in credentialed media. The NRA continues to impress me with how they've reached out to bloggers.

Weather = WTF, Houston? I left Massachusetts and 55 degree weather. I got to Houston it was 48 degrees. I came to Texas with one jacket expecting not to need it. I brought swim trunks for G-d's sake!

Nutball outside IAH = still trying to figure out what happened. The shooting itself happened about two hours before I landed, so they had everything cleared up by the time I got here. Media reports are still pretty vague, but it appears only the bad guy got deadified, so the blood dancers can't use it.

That's about it for now - look for pictures later.

That is all.

You forgot to mention the stupid wind we're having.

Any signs of hippies?

Public suicide. At least the guy thought about others. Didn't kill innocents. Didn't traumatize cops by making them do all the work.

Sad. Cue the "more likely to be killed by your own weapon" BS in 5... 4... 3...

I'm loving this weather!
I'll be at the game tonight watching the Red Sox destroy the Rangers, and I'm sure the weather won't be doing the home team any favors.

Do you have any pictures of the protesters?
I keep on reading about the multitude of protests and demonstrations...

Jay, it was nice meeting you at the Magpul booth. More news media showed up trying to find protesters than there were protesters. And I had a chuckle when I saw a foxnews photo of Obama on the left side and the Glock booth display, a close up of just pistols on the right side
Cheers, Jim

It will most likely be warmer before you leave. I was thinking George R Brown Convention Center would be too small and parking would be a b*tch. I can't make the annual meeting but I've been to GRB many times. Enjoy! TS

Yea, we are a wee bit bigger when you get down here. Sorry about the nutbag at the airport. Suicide by cop. Enjoy the cooler weather while it lasts. Should be warmer by the weekend. Hope you get a chance to try out some local watering holes. Chuy's is great. Ninfa's is pretty good.

My only complaint is the cost of parking in the attached garage. Other than that, it is only my own physical frailties hindering my enjoyment of the show.

Sorry about the weather. But, most of us living in Texas welcome it. It means that much longer until we are dealing with temps in the upper 90s.
