For My Author Friends Out There...

Just how crazy am I for jumping into the fray?

Had a killer idea come to me that (as far as I know) is moderately untapped. It has promise; I think I can add a bit to the genre; I think I've got a twist that hasn't been explored (or at least exploited to death). Dunno if this will be anything more than a short story at this time, but the more I diagram and wargame what this story should be, the more avenues I find ripe for exploration.

Proselytizing may be slightly hard to keep to a minimum (it'll make sense later, trust me); but for the target audience it shouldn't be an issue. The genre is pretty full and care will need to be taken not to tread on any toes (fortunately, to the best of my knowledge none of the folks I know in this business have written stories in this genre - yes, Marko, Peter, and Larry are the folks I'm thinking of specifically).

I suppose I should stock up on bourbon if I'm going to do this properly...

That is all.

Not crazy at all. If you have a good idea then you should go for it. Kindle (and other eBooks) have changed the market place forever. Self-published books most definitely have a good chance for success now. My only advice is to get others to proofread and/or edit for you and don’t skimp on the cover. Good luck!

Heh. Little do you know that Marko, Larry and I are monitoring your brainwaves. The week before you're due to publish, we'll put out our own joint blockbuster that'll turn your book into so many expensive targets!

You're crazy!

Do it anyway. You are already use to writing everyday. If you got a story, tell it. It's fun. I still have a few more chapters on my hard boiled Depression era detective novella, myself. (NaNoWriMo) I don't regret any of that time spent.

Do it, Jay.

Better yet, write down all the reasons NOT to do it. Add to the list all the negative comments people make, explaining why it would be crazy for you to try to write a book.

Then take that list to the range and make confetti of it. THEN go write the book!

Go for it. That's what I did, and so far people are still giving me money in exchange for the stories. Not J.K. Rowling money, but enough.

Reputedly, this is a very useful -and importantly, free - software package for writers. IIRC I learned of it from either Marko or Peter (or possibly both independently) and I'm finding it easy to use.

Look forward to seeing what you can do with it.

It takes of level of insanity to do it, so yes, you are crazy. Do it anyway.
One of these days maybe I'll get my own story idea whipped into shape.
