Don't Bring A Gun To A Swordfight?

Freiheit sent this in. What a weird story!

Die by the sword: Suspect killed in Firebaugh home invasion
A suspect in a home-invasion robbery in Firebaugh was killed by a sword-wielding resident early Saturday, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said.
The dead man, Aaron Baeza, 34, of Firebaugh was one of two suspects in the home invasion about 2:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Dodderer Street. The other suspect, Christopher Rupe, 30, left the home and remains at large, the Sheriff's Office said.
So, two goblins burst into this house. At least one of them has a gun. Yet one of them still winds up dead - from a sword, no less. Now, it's entirely possible this is more of the same stellar reporting that brings us "Glock Service Revolver" and "0.9mm", where a machete or a bowie-type knife gets turned into a sword, or perhaps these guys just managed to break into the home of a serious Highlander fan..

What it illustrates, rather graphically, is that the gun is not a magic talisman. Simply waving it in the general direction of your intended victim - or your attacker - may not be sufficient to dissuade them. In the case of the goblin, his unwillingness or hesitation in using the weapon gave his intended victim time to strike first, fatally in this case. It could easily have happened the other way - a goblin breaks in brandishing a weapon who is not immediately halted by the sight of a defensive firearm may strike first.

Never rely on the simple presence of a defensive weapon to stop an attacker - be prepared to use it to your best advantage...

That is all.

One goblin apparently had a gun, and the other had an axe. Details are sketchy, but several different articles describe the resident's weapon as "a samurai sword." I'm guessing that means he's a disciple of one of the weapon-wielding martial arts, and the "samurai sword" was a katana purchased for use in his training.

It also appears the two goblins were exceptionally stupid examples of the breed -- one article says they had the resident tied up, but freed him so he could get his cash stash and give it to them.

In the confined spaces of a small house, a sword may actually be a better weapon than a gun, especially if you know how to use the sword and your opponent doesn't know how to use his gun.

It was California. A sword is all he was allowed to own.

Wait till next week. Swords will be banned too. Swords being defined as any fixed or locking blade knife over 2.2 inches long. The legislators will argue about the precise length after one of them determines that his pocket knife is just a bit longer than the max, so he'll introduce an amendment to fix the length requirement at 2.3"

No, he won't Sean.

He'll pass an amendment making office holders (past and present) exempt from the legislation.

Most training/display "katanas" have same edge as a butter knife, and since there was no mention of various extra misc. body parts, I assume the sword was used as a stabby instead of the intended slice and dice function.

Had it been a trained Hylander fanboy intead of a dealer with a sword fetish certianly the story would have been a lot more .... "If it bleeds it leads"

Further evidence that the word weapon really shouldn't be considered a noun.

Very true. And that's the way you want it for a training weapon. However, it's also possible to buy katanas (or any other type of sword) with a live edge, as sharp and lethal as a combat blade should be.

Yes, you CAN get very sharp Katanas' and other swords... And I'm agreeing probably ran the perp through rather than whacked him.

Could also have been a SCAdian who has a nice dress blade. I've still got my Falcon Arms shortsword from my SCA days... and I'd hate to get either slashed OR stabbed with it. Best way to describe that blade is a two-foot-long spring steel razor blade.

+1 on what Ross said, though my sword doesn't sound as nice as his. Mine sits next to my bed, ready for use. Not as sharp as Ross's, but has a nice sharp point, and I do know how to use it quite effectively.

Just remember, in the end, there can be only One.

Besides, isn't a Sword the Weapon of Choice for Goblin? At least that's what Tolkein wrote...

Ross,
I doubt it was a SCAdian. I would have heard through the SCA grapevine by now.
