Headlines You Don't Often See...

Yeah, I know. The Senate GOP caved and stopped their filibuster of the gun bill. Some of the GOP Senators didn't surprise me, like McCain. Others, like NH Senator Kelly Ayotte, really hurt. Right now, though, I'm just so worn out and disheartened, and it's a crappy, cold, rainy end to the week, so here's a story of a different bent that'll leave you scratching your head...

Tree Falls On 79-Year-Old Woman Using Axe In Holliston
HOLLISTON (CBS) – A 79-year-old Holliston woman was rushed to the hospital after a tree fell on her in her backyard. Beatrice Wardford was actually cutting down the tree herself, using an axe, when the accident happened.
Her sixteen-year-old neighbor, Katelyn Springsteen, was walking home from the school bus when she heard the cries. “It sounded like a cat meowing. As I got closer I heard the cries for help,” she tells WBZ-TV.
Folks, I gotta say. If I'm 79 years old and still in good enough shape to be cutting down trees with an axe I will consider myself pretty darn lucky. I certainly hope that I'd have the good sense not to be on the wrong side of the tree while I was cutting it, mind you, but being of a sufficiently sprite body that I could still swing an axe at 79 would be something to look forward to. The woman initially refused medical care, but was transported to a local hospital and treated for her injuries.

The tree did not make any statement to authorities.

That is all.

We had a similar situation in this area a couple of years ago. An 86-year-old guy was clearing a piece of his land outside the city and a tree fell on him. The ending wasn't as happy as it was for the lady in Holliston, but one of the local talk radio commentators said he hoped he was still active enough at that age to go that way - working at something he loved.

It is believed that Samuel Whittemore was 83 when he marched out of his home and took on the Redcoats April 19, 1775 in Menotomy (modern day Arlington). Being too old can be a state of mind. Some folks refuse to succumb to it.

I caught that story on the news @ noon.
The stump shown was cut by a chainsaw, with an axe stuck into the stump.

(This is me, trusting the media again?)

Doubletrouble, maybe the tree wasn't cut clear through when it fell on her and they used the chain saw to cut it so they could move it?

I have to think that she wasn't a skilled lumber jack, or else the she would have cut it so that it it fell AWAY from her.

Ax Men, Season 1, Episode 1, about 10 minutes in! :)
