Don't Mess With The Squirrel...

Jeff in OR sends in this story of the stupidly criminal...

GPD: Would-be squirrel-killer injured after taping cartridge to BB gun
A man who tried to shoot a squirrel for dinner by taping a .40-caliber cartridge to a BB gun was hospitalized with shrapnel wounds after the cartridge exploded, Gainesville police reported.

A sworn complaint was filed against William Daniel Lloyd, 31, for discharging a firearm in public and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, Officer Ben Tobias stated in a press item.

Wow. Even in a BB gun a .40 turns into a grenade...

My mind boggles at the stupidity involved here. He taped a .40 S&W round to the end of a BB gun? So he could shoot a squirrel for dinner? Now, I don't know what kind of squirrels they get down in Florida, but up here you can take them with a standard BB with little problem. A .40 S&W would tend to be overkill, as it would tend to liquify most of the squirrel upon passing through.

I'm still trying to figure out how he got seriously injured even with the MacGuyver-on-stupid-pills arrangement. A Crosman 760 is a pump-actuated air rifle, meaning that the .40 S&W cartridge should have been a good distance away from the person holding the 760. Then again, I try not to waste time figuring out the ways of the criminally dumb...

It just goes to show you: bad things happen when you mess with the squirrel...

That is all.

Not to mention that without anything to contain the pressure and direct it downrange, the bb was more powerful then that .40 round would have been.

The bullet would act as a charge tamp, throwing the fragments of the case head back towards the shooter.

He could have put his eye out!

The .40 S&W is one of the higher pressure commonplace pistol rounds available. Depending on how he wrapped it with tape, it could have proven a significant little IED and it seems it was just that. See that, your mom probably was right - you probably could shoot out your eye with a BB gun, at least if you taped a pistol cartridge to the end of it.

All the best,

Did I forget to mention, that guy is one heck of an arsehat.

Any reason to take his squirrel hunting claim at face value?

Convicted felon working up a zip gun seems equally likely.

+1 on Matt... "Something" doesn't make sense...

I liked the bit about how he just found the .40 round while collecting scrap, because he knows that he can't have firearms.

I think he needs to put in a job application at ACME.

We have tree-rats. Small squirrel shaped critters. Not the cat sized suckers y'all have up north in yankee-land.

So the doofus should have been able to cap the squirrel with his bb-gun if it was reasonably powered.

Buy then again, this was in the People's Republik of Alachua County, where we are just finally getting a Bass Pro Shop.

God, I hate Alachua County.
