NJ, Newark schools settle for $5M in lawsuit by families of '07 schoolyard murder victims
NEWARK, N.J. – The families of three college-bound friends murdered in a Newark schoolyard in 2007 have reached a $5 million settlement with the city schools and state.Okay, so there was a gang that went after a group of kids hanging out in the schoolyard after midnight. In CrazyLand, this means that the school is responsible for what happened. Apparently they're supposed to put up razorwire after dark and leave a rabid pitbull inside the schoolyard to discourage teenagers from hanging around at midnight. And because they failed to make the schoolyard impenetrable, they are liable for the murders.
The settlement was announced Tuesday, several weeks into a civil trial.
The state attorney general's office says the Department of Education is responsible for $3 million and the Newark school district is liable for $2 million. The state has oversight of the Newark schools.
This makes perfect sense - if you are insane.
The families claimed the school district was negligent for leaving gates to the Mount Vernon School open at night when the schoolyard was a known gang hangout.RIGHT! Because gang members would have seen the locked gate and moved on, right? No, really, stop laughing! You mean to tell me that gang members that would execute three people just for being on their turf wouldn't be deterred by a locked gate? Next thing you know, you're going to tell me that locking the gate might have pissed them off and made they decide to start smashing windows or something. Here's a question: If this was a "known gang hangout", why the bloody hell weren't cops somewhere close by? The school is at fault for not locking a gate, but the city escapes liability even though they allow violent crime to flourish. Makes perfect sense to me!
You know what I'd like to know? I'd like to know what the "prison terms" are that the six people responsible for the murders are serving. I'll bet a good deal of money that not one of them will serve more than 10 years. I'd wager that the "boys" will be out by the age of 21, and the "men" will serve 8-10 at best. This is the part that the news conveniently leaves out - the shockingly small amount of jail time that is actually served even for horrific murders. You know why the guy who shot the NY firefighters didn't get much press? They hated having to admit the fact that he was out of jail for murder after only 14 years served - and he used a hammer for that murder.
Why, it's almost like we have a criminal problem, not a gun problem!
That is all.
