Demetrius Murphy identifed as Gravois Park shooting victim
ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A south St. Louis shooting victim has been identified.
Police say 15-year-old Demetrius Murphy and 17-year-old Michael Bryant were attempting to burglarize a home in Gravois Park just before 1:30 a.m. when one of them was shot by a resident of the home.
When officers arrived at the home in the 3700 block of Tennessee Avenue, they found Murphy dead of a gunshot wound.
Listening to the video embedded in the linked story, it sounds like this might be one of those cases of kids doing stupid things and paying a heavy price for it. Then again, it's not exactly balanced - they interviewed the boy's grandfather - who obviously has emotional attachment to the case, as well as someone who lived in the area. The news story is trying to paint the homeowner as some sort of Dirty Harry wannabe, but authorities are not as open-and-shut.
The problem is, when someone's breaking into your house it's damn near impossible to gauge whether they're just some fifteen year old kid being egged on by an older friend or someone with more sinister motives. You've got to be willing to bet your life - and the lives of everyone in your house - that the person trying to jimmy open your back door is only looking for a few big ticket items to grab and go rather than cause you harm.
Tough as it may be, the penalty for guessing wrong is even worse.
