Dumb, Dumb Criminals...

Wow. I simply cannot believe this story, sent in by Joseph in IL...

Off-duty cop's gun stolen in South Side hold-up
An off-duty Chicago police officer was robbed of his service weapon at gunpoint on the South Side, officials said.

The officer was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, near 91st Street and Martin Luther King Drive, when two men approached on each side of the car, police said.
Wow. Just wow. How incredibly freakin' stupid do you have to be to steal a cop's gun? I mean, this goes beyond run-of-the-mill stupid into an entirely new realm of dumb. First off, how hard are the cops going to look for your stupid ass? You assaulted one of their own, took his personal property *and* his duty gun. They are coming after you, hard, and they are not going to stop until you are sitting in the back of a cruiser, most likely with a bunch of fresh new lumps for resisting arrest.

Secondly, welcome to the world of Federal crimes! Even if by some miracle you're not a prohibited person already, it's highly likely that you will be captured close enough to a school zone or courthouse for a Federal charge to stick - and those start at 10 years, and you won't be down the street from your family. At the *very* least, assuming that you are squeaky clean and aren't already a prohibited person, you've committed a whole raft of felonies for which a judge will most likely sentence consecutive - not concurrent - jail terms. No FOID? Prison time. High capacity magazine in Chicago? Prison time. Lather, rinse, repeat.

And, lastly... So, down the road, we somehow miraculously manage to outlaw all legal ownership of firearms. Does anyone think that this story would NOT get repeated over and over? Criminals will still have guns. No matter how much we wish that we could legislate that away, it ain't gonna happen. They'll steal the guns, they'll use the guns they already have illegally to take guns away from cops, or they'll just wait for a cop to leave his gun in the bathroom. Bad guys are going to have guns and get more. Even if they have to risk a savage beat-down in the process.

And, really, someone dumb enough to mug a cop for his gun deserves every lump he receives in the process...

That is all.

Not much detail in that article. Given that the Windy City seems to have just as much crime in government as it does on the streets, what are the chances that the story is just that, and the officer 'lost' the sidearm some other way?

Given his training as a police officer in that third world war zone, why were his situational awareness spidey-sense receptors not turned up to 11?

If I see someone approaching my vehicle at a stop light or in a parking lot up here in South Tumbleweed, New Hampshire, I'm already plotting my escape route and making sure I have a clear path of access to my sidearm.

"I simply cannot believe this story,"

Jay, I've heard tell of crooks who paid their bail with a rubber check. Yes, some of them really are that stupid.

Not too stupid. He got the gun.

Ever notice that bad things happen on MLK Blvd. in every single city in the nation?

All of that assumes they don't just light wherever he's hiding on fire and burn him alive.

It's the new normal.

I'm reminded of this story:

Now, why was it that this guy had better situational awareness than a Chicago cop?

I'm thinking that the Ancient Woodsman may well be right. We'll find out soon enough! As our Honorable Host said, if this is real, Chicago PD will pull out all the stops looking for the perps. If we don't hear about an arrest, and right quick, we can assume something fishy is going on.

(That the police would NOT catch the perps boggles the imagination. Would a cop fail to get good descriptions of them? How much of a head start would they get after the crime? The most likely explanation for them not being found is if they don't exist.)

@ Daniel: That the police would NOT blow away everything that fits everything but 'the description' is pretty much pie-in-the-sky. See #ChrisDorner.

The cop who got robbed is a dumbass.

The perps will get away.

The Left will use this as another excuse to scream about more gun control, logic be damned.
