Our Turn In The Bucket...

Well, I wrote this post last night so it would publish today, but apparently it vanished without a trace.

Not content to let New York take all the "ZOMG WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING FOR TEH CHILDRENZZZZ" glory, Governor Cadillac Deval has filed his own "Seven round magazine" bill.

Prez, Patrick propose tighter gun limits

Twin gun-control proposals from President Obama and Gov. Deval Patrick yesterday have gun ownership advocates up in arms and gun-control fans cheering.
...
Here in Massachusetts, which already has some of the toughest firearms laws in the nation, Patrick called on the Legislature to make court judgments of mental health available in background checks for firearms licenses, institute a one-gun-per-month restriction on buyers and cut the allowable size of a weapon magazine from 10 to seven. While magazines larger than seven rounds would be grandfathered in, legal gun owners would be forbidden to load them with more than seven bullets. Both Patrick and Obama acted in response to last month’s Newtown, Conn., school killings.

So he one-upped Cuomo by adding in the one-gun-a-month law that he's been angling for since 2006 as well as a one-magazine-a-month. Existing ten round magazines will be grandfathered, but we cannot own any new magazines with capacities over 7 rounds. And, much like the stupidity in New York, if we load a ten round magazine with 8 - 10 rounds, we're a criminal.

I'm trying to comprehend on what planet this makes sense, because of COURSE mass murderers will only load their magazines with seven rounds, not ten, Why would you break a law when you're planning on committing mass murder? As far as I can tell, the only effect this is going to have on crime in Massachusetts is to inadvertently make tens of thousands of otherwise law-abiding gun owners into criminals.

There's simply no other explanation for it - make existing gun owners into criminals when they forget how many rounds they loaded and that eighth round gets added into the 10/22 magazine. The punishment is insane - a year in jail for a single round, a felony for the second offense? We're letting drunk drivers who cause traffic accidents out on their own recognizance, whereas if I forget how many rounds are in my plinking rifle I could go to ail for a year. Patrick thinks this will really help stop school shootings...

I think it's time to have a long discussion with the boss about heading north.

That is all.

Would this remove the grandfathering for existing 10+ round magazines, like NY did, and would that effect you?

I think it's time for you to be reaching for the ejection handles.

I assume that in this context, "the boss" is your wife?

It does remove grandfathering. No preban mags, period.

Put the snow blower in the back of your truck and drive south until someone asks you what it is.

You'll be among friends there.

I think the point of the 7 round limit is to get rid of 10 round magazines. But they don't want to try to make you get rid of your existing ones because then they'd have to pay you something for it. (Otherwise I think it's illegal seizure.) In any case, in a few months there won't be any more in stores and the people who have them will guard them jealously.

This is a niche market for the twin-1911 and twin-AR.

Time to keep writing and working to stop this insanity. It is not law yet folks. Rally on Saturday in Boston. . . .

Jay,

What of tube-fed rifles like my Marlin 60. Marlin already shortened the tube to 14 rounds to accomdate NJ law. As I asked on a different thread, how does one get 7 rounds into a Garand when they're designed for 8?

I'm calling my state officials and seeing if there is an opinion line for the Gov's office. Gah this shite makes me ill.

Gerry,

What is this "snowblower" you speak of? Why would you need to blow snow? Even after a blizzard, all four inches are generally clea by the day after next. . .

Jay, wish I could help. Kinda got my hands full here in CT. My unpaid gun rights work is consuming virtually every free minute I have right now. Tonight it's a town meeting for a nearby town that feels it can't wait for the state and feds to screw us; they need to ban guns RIGHT NOW.
Cheryl and I have been serious discussions on putting relocation plans on fast foward. It's rough in this economy, aspecially when it means both of us giving up good jobs.

Oh, and I think we still have y'all beat here in CT. We have a ONE ROUND LIMIT bill in the pipeline. Why should Elmer Fudd be allowed to keep his double barreled weapon of mass destruction?

Uh, like I've told you in the past, Jay, a Safe in a Storage Shed up in N.H. would be a Good Investment.

But I don't understand why you should be worried. After all, you are protected by .......THE MIGHTY SNUBBIEFROMHELL!

Heck, it's the only Firearm I've heard of that not only hurts the Bad guy, but also the Good Guy.

At least that what T-Bolt sez. ; )

He thinks no such thing. Not for a second.

But then, that's not the goal here.

I have a shed. And very reasonable rental rates.

If you think about it, except for certain 1911's and small pocket pistols what you end up with is a ban on most semi-auto firearms without calling it a ban. This way the state can argue that they aren't actually
infringing on the second amendment, just "reasonable" regulations...unless of course Glock, Sig, S&W decide to produce 7 round mags. You know this would be a perfect time for Kahr and S&W to announce that they are moving to more gun friendly states. Hit Deval where it hurts, his wallet. The same for NY and Cuomo.
