LOS ANGELES – Discovery Channel’s popular reality show about a family of gun makers, “American Guns," came under intense scrutiny in the wake of Friday’s mass shooting at a Connecticut grade school, with people flooding the show’s Facebook page calling for its cancelation.
“I know you all have to make money but would Discovery Channel PLEASE consider ceasing to broadcast the show in the U.K.? Sadly your program makes buying/owning guns seem fun, glamorous, even normal,” wrote one. Another tweeted, “Dear Discovery Channel: it’s not appropriate showing the program American Guns now!” Another weighed in: “With Discovery shows like 'Sons of Guns', 'American Guns', 'Ted Nugent's Gun Country' etc it's not surprising how guns r seen as acceptable.”Funny, but I don't hear anyone calling for Budweiser to pull their advertising from TV programs after some drunk plows their car into a family coming home from church. Heck, for that matter, no one gets upset that Ford advertises in print media and on television even though their products kill more people every year than any gun manufacturer. Only tobacco is more vilified than firearms as a legitimate business, and we all saw how the government went after the tobacco companies...
It's sad - but entirely predictable - that some are unable to separate television programming designed to entertain with the evening news. It's even more ironic that the disapproving tweets are coming from (formerly) Great Britain, which has a straight ban on handguns and rigid controls on long arms - and yet has seen an increase in gun crime. They can't keep guns out of an island nation, yet want to dictate what American TV can or cannot show.
Remember this, though. Remember this when we start getting too smug and complacent. All the gains we've made in the past 20 years can be wiped away by one disturbed madman; the same television shows that we've been pointing to as evidence of guns being mainstream can disappear in one cowardly act. Never forget that we gunowners are the redheaded stepchildren; the first to be blamed for the nation's ills and the last to be taken seriously as a voting bloc.
Liberty - especially pertaining to gun rights - is a fragile and temporary creature; we forget that at our own peril.
That is all.
