LA police: Fire set on woman 'defies explanation'
LOS ANGELES — Police say the attack defies explanation: A man poured flammable liquid on a 67-year-old homeless woman as she slept on a bus bench in the San Fernando Valley, then lit a match and set her on fire.
A witness called 911, and police arrested 24-year-old Dennis Petillo a short time after the Thursday morning attack. He was booked for investigation of attempted murder and was held on $500,000 bail. It wasn't immediately known if he had retained an attorney. So, this dude felt the need to light some random stranger on fire while she slept on a park bench. She did not provoke him in any way; it's unlikely that he even knew her; yet he walked up to her sleeping body, poured flammable liquid on her, and lit her on fire. Either he's completely bugnuts f**king crazy, or he's just an evil, evil person who gets his kicks from inflicting pain on others - and, oh, maybe even killing them.
Interestingly enough, no one's calling for a ban on Ronson lighter fluid. There's no "common sense Zippo control". No one's using this story as an example of why we need a "one Bic a month" law. Yet, statistically, you're more likely to have someone try to set you on fire than to be attacked in a mass shooting - so why no outrage? Why isn't anyone calling for lighter control? There's no right to keep and bear Bics in the Constitution, right?
My point is, there are evil and/or criminally insane people everywhere. Denying me the Constitutionally enumerated right to keep and bear arms is not going to stop someone hell-bent on hurting others. They'll obtain arms illegally or simply use other methods - as shown by this story. Keeping arms out of the hands of the good people - which is all gun control is going to do - will do about as much to address gun violence as a ban on Zippo™ brand lighters would do to prevent situations like this one.
IOW, about as effective as a screen door in a submarine.
That is all.
