WASHINGTON — House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi says she's hopeful lawmakers can come to a deal to avoid a year-end "fiscal cliff" but any agreement has to include tax rate increases for the wealthy.
She tells ABC's "This Week" that she can't accept a deal that caps deductions and closes some loopholes but does not alter current tax rates for the wealthy.Or small businesses. It's funny how no one likes to add that part in; that these tax hikes aren't just going to affect the nebulous "wealthy" that the Democrats love to demonize, but also thousands of small business owners across America. Also, remeber that "the wealthy" are already paying more than the "not wealthy" to begin with - of course, when class warfare rhetoric is all you have to offer, facts be damned.
The GOP will cave; of this I am certain. They don't have the guts to stand up to the Democrats and their allies in the media - they remember all too well the blame heaped upon them for the government shutdowns in the 1990s that were laid at the feet of the GOP. They'll be eager to appear willing to "compromise", which of course means complete capitulation when dealing with the Democrats.
The most infuriating thing is that these idiots don't realize that they can't win. If they do allow "the wealthy" to take it in the shorts, it's not going to fix anything and it's going to hand Obama and the Democrats a 24-point font "WE WIN" headline. This won't be publicized as the GOP making concessions to get things moving in the spirit of bipartisanship, it will be heralded as yet another example of Teleprompter Jesus's incredible leadership. Even in losing, they'll lose.
It's interesting to see that headline, though. To see even obliquely that the Democrats are once again banking on tax hikes to save things adds fuel to the fire that they are not serious about debt reduction or fiscal stability; but rather they would prefer to take from the nation's producers yet again to hand off "free" money to those that do not produce. It's also interesting to see Pelosi referred to as "House Democratic Leader" rather than her official title of "House Minority Leader". It's like the media can't admit that the GOP has the majority.
Except when it comes time to assign blame, of course.
That is all.
