Geekin' Out!

Heh. Brad_in_MA sends in this supremely geektastic story:

William Shatner will atend ceremony for the USS Enterprise
From 1966-69, Capt. James T. Kirk piloted the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701).

On Saturday at the Norfolk Naval Station, William Shatner - the actor who played Kirk - will attend the inactivation ceremony for the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65).

I'm sorry, but that's so damn cool it hurts... Yes, I know, Shatner's Canadian, blah blah blah. Shut up. ENTERPRISE. Hello? How freaking cool is it that Captain James Tiberius Kirk will be on hand for the final voyage of the warship Enterprise? The man who commanded a fictional starship will be on hand for the final run of the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

I can't stop geekin' out here!

That is all.

Too Bad there's not another Carrier named Enterprise to replace the Big E.

Looks like he had to cancel.

Not to worry, though. There will still be a James Kirk on board.

"Among them is a young sailor named James Kirk, who was reportedly the subject of many jokes during the ship's final voyage.

He's not the captain, though. This Kirk is a petty officer second class, a machinist, and he does plan to attend."

Yet another case of journalists not getting the facts right. Kirk didn't pilot the Enterprise. Sulu did.

Oh My.

There will be another Enterprise one day. It might be 10 to 15 years from now.

Paint some female sailors blue or green. Horney old Capt. Kirk will show up.

I thought he was cool to the max as well, until I met him personally.

When Enterprise was in Newport News for an RCOH 15 years or so ago, I noticed that ALL the ship's company had Starfleet insignia stickers covering up the official USN ship logo on their nametags.

Is that really such a good idea? We all know what happened last time he was around for a farewell of the Enterprise.

@Les, SECNAV announced at the ceremony that CVN-80 will be named Enterprise.

Whether Jimmy Kirk was there or not, I really wanted to attend. The Big E was my only "ship's company" tour (being aviation and primarily "O" level, I was normally attached to ships temporarily only during the duration of a deployment, not stationed on them)

Unfortunately, I was in Portland on a business trip and had to miss it.

Interestingly, because I was an "O" level technician attached to an "I" level command, they didn't know what to do with me so they stuck me in Security the whole time I was on board.

I was a red shirt.

Maybe it's a good thing neither Capt. Kirk nor I made it to the ceremony. I may not have made it home alive.
