Friday Gun Pr0n #291

Whoa. Closing in on 300. Today's gun pic comes to us courtesy of Wally and York Arms.

Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .223 Remington. 20" heavy barrel, Hogue overmolded stock, capable of sub-MOA accuracy with, as Wally put it, the "slimiest" reloads.

Personally, I prefer the .308 Winchester version, as it is G-d's Own Caliber (New Testament), but for the intended purpose of varmint control, the .223 Remington chambering makes perfect sense. It's not quite as spendy as .308 Win, much less recoil, and will take out small varmints at distances that might surprise you (sure as hell surprised me!). Something like this on a sturdy rest parked near a prairie dog town could make quite the dent in the local population...

When you're talkin' p-dogs, only two words come to mind: GIT SOME!

That is all.

Jay,

I have a silly question. IIRC, 223 fodder can be safely fired in rifles chambered for 5.56 Nato, but not the reverse. You say that this setup is chambered for Remington .223 ammo. Can it safely fire the Nato stuff?

Heretic!

Jesus shot a 30-06. St Peter worked as his spotter but he never had to call a correction.

The .308 came from Martin Luther when he shot targets nailed to some church door.

I could be wrong

Brad,
This is a true .223 Rem chamber, no 5.56 allowed here.

I hardly even notice the recoil from my Rem 700 in .308. It's certainly not near as much as as my Dad's Winchester 30-06 or his lever action 30-30 was.

Better watch posts like this, Jay, some asshole may come along and steal it for his site and not even give you a reach around for it.

Course, we don't know any Truth telling sites like that, do we?

I have the SPS Varmint which is the same gun, but 26" instead of 20" barrel. Oh, and .308 instead of .223. That heavy barrel sure adds a lot of weight, but it also adds A LOT of accuracy.
