Defining the Category...

Heh. Got this from the BLNN:

Intoxicated Oregon man shoots paintball gun at 2 officers
EUGENE, Oregon – There was a shootout in Eugene between an intoxicated man firing a paintball gun and police firing rubber bullets and beanbag rounds.

Police won. Officers took the 49-year-old man into custody Sunday evening after about 30 minutes.
Now, the story is barely more than a stub, but I'd like to imagine that the two cops rolled up, came under fire, realized what they were up against, and pulled the classic "Oh no you di-int!". Paintballs are painful as hell, especially if you're not expecting them, and I don't think anyone would have faulted the officers for returning fire with real bullets. That they took him down using rubber bullets and beanbag rounds means they paid attention to the call, observed the suspect, and responded with like force.

I do hope that the officers got in a few hits on some, err, unprotected areas...

That is all.

"Police won."

WELL THEY DAMNED-WELL BETTER HAVE WON!!

Could you imagine the stories around the station if they'd lost?

But, seriously, good job to those two for keeping the level of force low.
Like you said, it'd be hard to fault them for a quick reaction with hot lead.

What Cormac said. Those guys ought to be given an award for using their heads and using a appropriate level of force to subdue the guy.

I'm kinda hoping they had fun with it...

[Cop 1] He's shooting a paintball gun at us. He can't DO that!

[Cop 2] Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

[Cop 1 & 2, in unison] LESS THAN LETHAL!

Heck, it could have been a unique live-fire training exercise.

At least that's what I hope the told the sarge...

I think should have pulled back, put on goggles and face guards, chrony'd their guns, then gone two on one. They could always arrest him later. Meanwhile, paintball!

I wish we could see how many "cops doing the right thing" stories actually occur in this nation every day. I'll bet there are a lot that go unreported because they're not news. When all you see in the papers and on TV is the bad eggs, it's easy to start thinking they're all like that.

Good job, officers!

Hey, my paintball team came within a hair of shooting a deputy that walked onto our field in the middle of the night (we were playing a night game under a full moon) Some Floridiot had called them and complained about the noise. Fortunatly he knew me personally and wasn't upset. Just told us we had to pack it in for the night.
