BOSTON (CBS/AP) – The chemist at the center of the state drug lab scandal testified under oath that she holds a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, but school officials said on Tuesday that they have no record of her receiving an advanced degree or taking graduate courses there. The state is accusing Dookhan of mishandling drug samples submitted by local police agencies. She testified under oath that she had a Master's Degree from the University of Massachusetts system. The University system is claiming otherwise. Now, one of the two entities is lying, and I'm inclined to believe U. Mass here - they've got a hell of a lot more to lose if they're wrong.
Annie Dookhan also listed a master’s degree from UMass-Boston on a 2011 resume.
Now, with that said, it's pretty telling that the MA State drug lab didn't do even the most cursory of background checks on this person to make sure they held the credentials they claimed. She worked at the State Drug Lab since 2003, meaning that for nearly 10 years she has benefited monetarily from a degree she does not possess. I wonder if they'll go after her for fraud as well as perjury?
It's tempting to speculate on the mishandling of specimens. Is she a libertarian who believes that the War on (Some) Drugs only hurts innocent people? Did she intend to cast into doubt every single drug conviction ever obtained in the state of Massachusetts from 2003 to present that relied on the state's testing? Was it just laziness? I doubt we'll ever know, but I do have one piece of advice for Ms. Dookhan:
I see the phrase "Do you want fries with that?" in your employment future...
That is all.
