Monday WTF Story of the Day...

Here's one that'll make you shudder...

Brazilian worker survives iron bar piercing skull
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - A 24-year-old construction worker survived after a 6-foot metal bar fell from above and pierced his head, doctors said Friday.

Luiz Alexandre Essinger, chief of staff at Rio de Janeiro's Miguel Couto Hospital, said doctors successfully withdrew the iron bar from Eduardo Leite's skull during a five-hour surgery.

There's a scan of the accident at the article. HOLY SMOKES is all I'm going to say. It looks like it went right in between the eyes and out the top of the skull - it's amazing he wasn't pithed...

I have a headache just looking at that...

That is all.

From the linked story:

He said Leite was conscious when he arrived at the hospital and told him what had happened.

Holy crap. "Hey guys? Do you think maybe one of y'all could, ya know, remove this chunk of metal rod from my skull?" Dude lucked out. Big time.

Oh, I'm sure he was: I don't think anyone would be very happy with an iron bar stuck through their head.

Gravity: Don't Mess With It!

I just saw video of a teenager from Florida(?) with a spear, shot from a spear gun, through his head, front to back. He survived, can talk, move around (is getting therapy) and apparently thinks clearly. It is amazing what the brain can take.

I worked as a hospital security guard, while in college, and was assigned 10 or 12 hours to the ER one day. Guy came in with bullet in brain near start of my shift, was still alive at end of my shift. As I recall, the hospital wsas waiting for a surgeon to fly back to US from ski trip in Europe - no other doc would touch him. I saw xrays, they thought it was one bullet, split in two pieces, one went straight in and lodged in about center of brain while the other went down and back further. I would guess a 45 or at least a .38.

I have always wondered if he made it. He was concious most of the time begging for help and asking why no one was doing anything for him. It was pathetic.

True that. Jay may have seen some comments on my Book of Face page, but a friend of mine just survived a skydiving accident. He double malfunctioned (two streamers) from 2300'...and survived. 11 August, down in Texas. For the life of me, I cannot understand why this has not made the national feel good news level.

Not a head wound, but when my Mom was on the ER rotation at Legendary Hospital in Houston in 1969, a gent came in with a large knife stuck in his aorta. Mom says that the ER staff and paramedics were not sure what to do. They could not just leave the knife in him, but if they took it out he'd bleed to death in a right rapid manner. What Mom really remembers is watching the thing bounce up and down every time the victim's heart beat. He was still there waiting for a heart doc when Mom went off shift.

I knew a guy who took a bullet from an AK through the head over in Viet Nam; if it hadn't been a hardball round it probably would have killed him.
He recovered with no change in his memory or cognitive abilities.
