How Could This Have Happened???

A late-breaking dispatch from the BLNN:

Security Guard Shot in Arm in Downtown DC
A security guard for a conservative Christian lobbying group has been shot in the arm in the nation's capital.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier says a man walked into the Family Research Council in the city's Chinatown neighborhood about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday and was confronted by a security guard, whom he shot. The guard and others wrestled the man to the ground and he was taken into custody by the FBI.
Last I checked, DC was still fighting to prevent people from *owning* handguns, let alone carrying them. To the best of my knowledge, only LEO are allowed to carry firearms in DC, yet we have someone shot. Why, it's almost like gun control is an abysmal failure at stopping people from breaking the law!

I remember back in the late 1990s, there was a shooting at the National Zoo in DC. It was - big shock here - gang related, a number of teens from one particular gang didn't appreciate someone from a different gang on their turf, so they eschewed traditional gang warfare (the sing-off as portrayed in West Side Story) and just opened fire. Of course, Al Gore (poised to run in 2000) capitalized on the shooting and decried the easy availability of firearms, despite the people involved being too young, in an area where no permits were issues, and the ownership of handguns was illegal.

And here we have yet another shooting in an alleged gun-free zone...

That is all.

I'm sure the shooter was a bitter clinger racist vet!

What, he wasn't? Never mind, no story here.

Kids, if you believe in fairies hard enough, Tinker Belle will become alive!

Isn't that the true basis of gun control in its' various forms - wishful thinking devoid of logic? Magical thinking is believing that legislating against any activity makes the activity cease immediately. Would you bet your life on gun control bringing peace to all in the land? Or is it more realistic to believe that your only hope is the ability to effectively defend yourself and your family with the necessary tools? We wish that armed police forces will protect us without recognizing that the first line of defense is ourselves. We do not want nor can we afford the level of police enforcement to guarantee "peace". Even prisons, the most government controlled environments that we can create, are still unsafe places to be.
