Obama Complains that Michelle Doesn't Make Money As First Lady
While it is technically true that the position of First Lady does not draw a salary, it's amazingly misleading. For starters, there's the little matter of living rent-free and not having to pay for food. There's also the matter of them having a staff - Michelle, BTW, has a staff of 24 - a full third larger than that of Laura Bush. And of course, there's the little matter of being able to go anywhere in the entire world one desires, on a private jet, with a full complement of staff to take care of things.President Obama spoke to women supporters today at a Denver event."...I wanna make sure that when she's working she is getting paid the same as men, I gotta say that First Ladies right now don't, even though that's a tough job!"
What's not surprising, of course, is the complete and utter lack of coverage of such a stupid and pandering remark. Had George Bush lamented that Laura did not receive a salary for the work she did as First Lady, the headlines would have been ablaze with stories about the size and cost of her staff, vacations, etc. before the words finished passing his lips. The office of the First Lady, long considered the official hostess of the White House, may not officially draw a salary, but the prestige, honor, and, well, perks more than make up for the lack of compensation.
It's sad that Obama feels the need to make such outlandish statements, but then again, it's not like he's going to talk about the economy...
That is all.
